The Situation

Broadsheet formats have mainly historical reasons :
  • Broadsheet developed in the 18th century so publishers could avoid paying per-pages taxes
  • Belgium: unique format to fit inside postman's bag
  • During the war, numbers of pages were rationed
In addition, increased competition from
  • Advertising Paper
  • Free Sheets
  • Metro
  • Others

The Trends

Consequences in . . .

Readership/Circulation
+ -
Reader prefer smaller format Older core readers oppose the change; drop of 3 to 5% in subscription possible
Especially important target commuters and females can be won for the newspaper On the long run, circulation decline will probably not be stopped
Increase in circulations of approx. 6-8% in first year

Advertising:
+ -
Advertising gets modern, attractive environtment Be carefull with your pricing!
  • No overall experiences
  • Tedency towards lower prices for same page rations(full or half pages), approx.-20%
Smaller ads gain higher response values in compact format as same dimensions look bigger
Possibilities of standardisation and introduction of new shapes

Editorial:
+ -
Good opportunity to rethink content and design Stories have to be shortened. Conflict among editorial staff may arise

Production:
+ -
Change to taboid does not require new presses Change to Berliner format requires new presses
